Foot Locker Scholarships

Sept 18th - Dec 5th

Foot Locker Scholar Athletes

The truth is that many deserving students, who have dedicated a great deal of their time to athletics, will not receive athletic scholarships to college. Foot Locker and DoSomething.org will be rewarding 20 incoming college freshmen with $20,000 in scholarship funding for college - not because they scored the most touchdowns, but because of their character and commitment to volunteerism. This is the award for flexing heart, not muscle.

How to Improve Your Score on the ACT

Highland Home Juniors and Seniors:

Here are some websites and tips to help you improve your score on the ACT.

1) Focus on the areas you scored lower on. For many students these areas are GRAMMAR and MATH. Find websites and activities below to help you study.

2) MEMORIZE formulas for math. Many tests you are used to GIVE you the formulas, but the ACT expects you to know them (and how to use them!)
[Follow this website for an easy-to-use study guide for the formulas used on the ACT]
http://www.erikthered.com/tutor/act-facts-and-formulas.pdf
Quiz yourself: (uncheck "both sides" to see if you know them)

3) Study WISELY. Staring at a study guide does not teach you anything. Here are four tips on how to make the most of your study time:
       a) Design your own test. You have to really know what you're doing to make up problems. This also shows you ways that the test-makers can be tricky with the answers they give.
       b) Make FLASHCARDS. Have two piles: one for the ones you know and one for things you need to study study study.
       c) Have a someone call out questions. See how quickly you can answer questions. Many students get nervous when they have a limited amount of time on a test. Prepare yourself by studying UNDER PRESSURE.
       d) Use mnemonic devices to memorize difficult facts. Here's a website with examples. It's better that you make up your own, you are more likely to remember them that way! http://www.mnemonic-device.com/

4) Practice Practice Practice!

Fun websites:

5) Review TEST TAKING TIPS

Day of the test tips (from ACT)
  • Get plenty of rest the night before test day.
  • Dress comfortably. Some test centers are warmer or cooler on weekends than during the week. Consider dressing in layers, so you'll be comfortable no matter what the room conditions are.
  • Check your ticket for your test option—ACT (No Writing) or ACT Plus Writing—Reporting Time (normally 8:00 a.m.), and the reporting location of your test center.
  • You must bring a printed copy of your ticket to the test center. You will not be admitted without it. In addition, your ticket contains Matching Information you must copy exactly onto your answer document or your scores will be delayed, possibly up to 8 weeks.
  • If you're unsure where your test center is located, do a practice run to see how to get there and what time you'll need to leave to arrive by 8:00 a.m.
  • If you arrive earlier than 7:45 a.m., you might have to wait outside until testing staff complete their arrangements.
  • Make sure you have acceptable photo identification. You will not be admitted to test if your ID does not meet ACT’s requirements.
  • Bring snacks or drinks to consume outside the test room only during the break.
  • Be ready to begin testing after everyone has been checked in and seated.

Thinking about buying a test prep book? Don't buy it off the ACT website, you can buy used ones off Amazon for less than $1
